Controller

Our client is a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting homelessness in the greater NYC area. Their team is now looking for an excellent Controller.

Salary/Hourly Rate:

$140k – $150k

Position Overview:

The Controller will lead the organization’s accounting operations, ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit financial regulations, and support their financial goals.

Responsibilities of the Controller:

• Oversee the daily accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and bank reconciliations.
• Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
• Manage and monitor cash flow forecasting.
• Maintain internal controls and ensure compliance with GAAP and other financial regulations.
• Lead annual audit preparation and liaise with external auditors.
• Support the development of the annual organizational budget in collaboration with department heads.
• Monitor budget-to-actual performance and analyze variances.
• Provide financial analysis and insights to support strategic planning and decision-making.
• Manage financial aspects of government and private grants, including tracking, reporting, and compliance.
• Ensure accurate allocation of restricted and unrestricted funds.
• Prepare required financial reports for funders and stakeholders.
• Supervise accounting staff (if applicable), including training, performance management, and professional development.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with program and development teams to ensure financial alignment with organizational goals.

Required Experience/Skills for the Controller:

• Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting (FASB standards), and fund accounting.
• Experience with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, Blackbaud).
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
• Commitment to the mission and values of the organization.
• Experience in nonprofit finance and grant management.
• Familiarity with federal and state compliance requirements for 501(c)(3) organizations.

Education Requirements:

• CPA or MBA required.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
