Our client is a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting homelessness in the greater NYC area. Their team is now looking for an excellent Controller.
Salary/Hourly Rate:
$140k – $150k
Position Overview:
The Controller will lead the organization’s accounting operations, ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit financial regulations, and support their financial goals.
Responsibilities of the Controller:
- Oversee the daily accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and bank reconciliations.
- Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Manage and monitor cash flow forecasting.
- Maintain internal controls and ensure compliance with GAAP and other financial regulations.
- Lead annual audit preparation and liaise with external auditors.
- Support the development of the annual organizational budget in collaboration with department heads.
- Monitor budget-to-actual performance and analyze variances.
- Provide financial analysis and insights to support strategic planning and decision-making.
- Manage financial aspects of government and private grants, including tracking, reporting, and compliance.
- Ensure accurate allocation of restricted and unrestricted funds.
- Prepare required financial reports for funders and stakeholders.
- Supervise accounting staff (if applicable), including training, performance management, and professional development.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with program and development teams to ensure financial alignment with organizational goals.
Required Experience/Skills for the Controller:
- Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting (FASB standards), and fund accounting.
- Experience with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, Blackbaud).
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Commitment to the mission and values of the organization.
- Experience in nonprofit finance and grant management.
- Familiarity with federal and state compliance requirements for 501(c)(3) organizations.
Education Requirements:
- CPA or MBA required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
