Controller

Our client is a reputable and growing construction organization seeking a Controller to join their team based in Lakeland, FL. This is an excellent opportunity to join the company during a period of growth within a close-knit, collaborative environment.

Salary/Hourly Rate:

$110k – $140k

Position Overview:

The Controller will join a cohesive accounting department and report directly to ownership. This is a hands-on role responsible for managing all financial and accounting functions of the organization. The ideal Controller brings a customer-first mindset and is comfortable working within a lean accounting team while maintaining strong financial controls and reporting.

Responsibilities of the Controller:

• Oversee all financial and accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and HR-related functions.
• Establish and maintain financial controls, procedures, and reporting systems.
• Prepare timely and accurate monthly reconciliations and financial reports.
• Prepare monthly accounts receivable progress billings in accordance with contract terms.
• Monitor daily cash balances to ensure operational requirements are met.
• Prepare and process bi-weekly payroll and associated payroll reporting.
• Meet all internal and external financial reporting deadlines.
• Oversee monthly job cost reporting and cost analysis.
• Manage insurance programs, risk protection, and benefit plans including ESOP and 401(k).
• Coordinate insurance, accounting, and general ledger audits.
• Maintain required licensures and ensure ongoing compliance with regulations.

Required Experience/Skills for the Controller:

• 3–5+ years of construction accounting experience, including job costing and cost analysis.
• Proficiency with Sage 300 (new versions) and strong Microsoft Excel skills.
• Ability to navigate ERP systems, expense tools, and financial reporting platforms.
• Strong ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and resolve complex issues.

Preferred Experience/Skills for the Controller:

• Local to the Lakeland, Florida area.
• Human Resources and administrative experience.
• Experience working within both general contracting and subcontracting environments.

Education Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Economics required; advanced education preferred.
