Client Overview:

Our client is a well-established heavy civil construction company specializing in large-scale infrastructure projects, including roadways, bridges, utilities, site development, and public works. Their teams manage complex, schedule-driven projects across multiple states, delivering high-quality work safely, on time, and within budget. We are seeking a skilled Construction Project Manager to join our client’s Hillsborough, NJ, office and lead field and office operations on heavy civil projects.

Salary/Hourly Rate:

$150k Annually

Position Overview:

The Construction Project Manager will be responsible for the overall planning, coordination, and execution of heavy civil construction projects from pre-construction through closeout. This is an on-site role based in Hillsborough, NJ, with frequent travel to project sites across multiple states. The Project Manager will oversee project budgets, schedules, subcontractors, and field teams while ensuring safety, quality, and compliance with contract documents and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities of the Construction Project Manager:

  • Lead and manage heavy civil construction projects from start to finish, including pre-construction planning, execution, and closeout.
  • Develop, monitor, and update project schedules and work plans; coordinate with superintendents and field staff to ensure project milestones are maintained.
  • Prepare, manage, and track project budgets, cost reports, change orders, and forecasts.
  • Review and interpret plans, specifications, and contract documents, and ensure work is performed in accordance with requirements.
  • Coordinate and manage subcontractors, suppliers, and vendors; negotiate scopes and pricing as needed.
  • Conduct regular site visits across multiple states to monitor progress, safety, quality, and compliance.
  • Lead project meetings with owners, engineers, inspectors, and other stakeholders; maintain strong client relationships.
  • Oversee RFIs, submittals, documentation, and project correspondence.
  • Ensure strict adherence to company safety policies and OSHA regulations on all project sites.
  • Support project closeout, including punch lists, final inspections, and turnover documentation.

Required Experience/Skills for the Construction Project Manager:

  • 7+ years of construction project management experience in heavy civil construction (e.g., highways, bridges, utilities, site work, public infrastructure).
  • Proven experience managing projects from $5M+ in value.
  • Strong understanding of civil construction means and methods, sequencing, and logistics.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage project budgets, cost controls, and schedules.
  • Proficiency with project management and scheduling software (e.g., MS Project, Primavera P6) and MS Office Suite.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and leadership skills.
  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly to project sites in multiple states.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.

Preferred Experience/Skills for the Construction Project Manager:

  • Experience working with DOT, municipal, and public agency contracts.
  • Prior work on multi-state heavy civil projects.
  • Familiarity with construction management software (e.g., Procore, HCSS, or similar).
  • Experience managing self-perform crews in earthwork, concrete, utilities, or structures.

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and relevant heavy civil project management experience will be considered.
