Our client is a nonprofit dedicated to helping individuals build greater independence, confidence, and long-term success through personalized support and community-based programs. Serving the Central Florida region for several decades, they deliver education, skill development, and life-enhancing services that support people at multiple stages of life. They are currently looking to add a Controller to their team.

Salary/Hourly Rate:

$85k – $110k

Position Overview:

The Controller is a hands-on leadership role responsible for overseeing day-to-day accounting operations while contributing financial insight and strategic support. This position ensures accurate financial records, reliable reporting, and efficient processes, while providing guidance and mentorship to members of the accounting team. The role partners closely with leadership and cross-functional teams to support informed decision-making and strengthen financial operations.

Responsibilities of the Controller:

  • Manage month-end and year-end closing processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Prepare, review, and approve general ledger journal entries and supporting documentation.
  • Develop, maintain, and monitor account reconciliation schedules and analyses.
  • Research accounting issues, resolve discrepancies, and document findings.
  • Oversee fixed asset accounting, including capitalization, depreciation, and related reporting.
  • Support grant and fund accounting activities, including revenue recognition and expense alignment.
  • Ensure program, project, and departmental costs are appropriately recorded and allocated.
  • Prepare and analyze financial statements and internal management reports.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning efforts.
  • Develop and refine financial analyses, performance metrics, and reporting tools.
  • Assist with compliance related to federal, state, and local funding or reporting requirements.
  • Identify opportunities to improve reporting quality, transparency, and operational efficiency.
  • Provide day-to-day guidance, coaching, and support to accounting and finance team members.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to resolve issues and improve workflows.
  • Design and implement process improvements and automation to support scalability.
  • Serve as backup support for finance and accounting operations as needed.
  • Participate in organizational initiatives and perform additional related duties as assigned.

Required Experience/Skills for the Controller:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in accounting or finance, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Hands-on experience with core accounting functions, including general ledger management, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Strong working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Proven ability to analyze financial data and communicate insights to leadership.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel, including complex formulas and data analysis.

Preferred Experience/Skills for the Controller:

  • Experience in nonprofit or mission-based accounting environments.
  • Exposure to grant, fund, or cost accounting.
  • Prior experience mentoring, supervising, or coaching team members.
  • CPA designation or active progress toward licensure.
  • Experience supporting audits, regulatory reporting, or compliance tied to government funding.

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field is required.
