Client Overview:

Our client is a respected and growing construction services organization with a strong reputation for delivering high-quality projects across a diverse portfolio. The company is committed to operational excellence, financial discipline, and building long-term relationships with both clients and employees. Our client is seeking an Assistant Controller to join their team.

Salary/Hourly Rate:

$125,000 – $140,000

Position Overview:

The Assistant Controller will support the Controller in overseeing the company’s accounting and financial operations. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the accuracy of financial reporting, maintaining strong internal controls, supporting budgeting and forecasting efforts, and driving continuous improvements in accounting processes. The Assistant Controller will partner closely with operational leaders and project teams to provide financial insight and support business growth.

Responsibilities of the Assistant Controller:

  • Assist with the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Support the month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial analysis.
  • Review and maintain the general ledger and ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial data.
  • Assist in the preparation of budgets, forecasts, and variance analyses.
  • Monitor cash flow, working capital, and financial performance metrics.
  • Support project accounting functions, including job costing, revenue recognition, and Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting.
  • Partner with project managers and operations leaders to monitor project profitability and financial performance.
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, company policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with external audits, tax compliance, and reporting requirements.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and General Ledger personnel.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Serve as a backup to the Controller and assist with special projects as needed.

Required Experience/Skills for the Assistant Controller:

  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Experience in construction, engineering, specialty contracting, or other project-based industries.
  • Experience with financial statement preparation and account reconciliations.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software/ERP systems.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Experience/Skills for the Assistant Controller:

  • Knowledge of job costing, construction accounting, and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition.
  • Experience with Viewpoint, Sage, CMiC, or similar construction ERP systems.
  • Experience supporting audits, WIP schedules, and multi-entity accounting environments.
  • Strong process improvement and system implementation experience.

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
