Our client is a mission-driven nonprofit organization dedicated to making a meaningful impact in the communities they serve. They are seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to join their collaborative Finance team and help ensure the organization’s financial integrity and operational excellence.

Position Overview:

Our client is seeking a Senior Accountant to support the day-to-day accounting operations and financial reporting for a growing nonprofit organization. This role is responsible for maintaining the general ledger, leading month-end and year-end close processes, assisting with budgeting, supporting external audits, and ensuring compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, collaborative, and enjoys working in a mission-focused environment.

Responsibilities of the Senior Accountant:

  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
  • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
  • Maintain the general ledger in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Assist with the preparation of the annual operating budget and monitor budget-to-actual performance.
  • Analyze financial variances and provide recommendations.
  • Prepare audit schedules and support annual external audits.
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance accounting operations.
  • Mentor and guide junior accounting staff.
  • Provide backup support for accounts payable and accounts receivable functions as needed.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams and department leaders on financial reporting and operational initiatives.

Required Experience/Skills for the Senior Accountant:

  • 5 – 7+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP.
  • Experience with month-end close, reconciliations, financial reporting, and budgeting.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables and complex formulas.
  • Experience with ERP/accounting systems such as Sage Intacct, Microsoft Dynamics GP, or similar platforms.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.

Preferred Experience/Skills for the Senior Accountant:

  • Prior nonprofit accounting experience.
  • Experience working with organizations exceeding $15M in annual budgets.
  • CPA or CPA candidate preferred.
  • Experience supporting annual audits and strengthening internal controls.
  • Passion for working in a collaborative, mission-driven environment.

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance is required.
  • Master’s degree is preferred.
  • CPA or CPA candidate is preferred.
