Client Overview:

Our client, a well-established public accounting firm, is seeking a Tax Accountant to support tax preparation, bookkeeping, payroll tax filings, and financial reporting services for a diverse client base. This role plays a key part in delivering high-quality accounting and tax solutions while partnering with clients to support their financial and business objectives.

Salary/Hourly Rate: 

$35/hr – $50/hr, plus overtime at time-and-a-half

Position Overview:

The Tax Accountant is passionate about accounting and tax compliance and thrives in a client-focused public accounting environment. This role is responsible for preparing corporate and individual tax returns, maintaining accurate financial records, performing bookkeeping functions, and supporting payroll and sales tax reporting requirements. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, highly organized, and capable of working independently with minimal supervision. This is an onsite opportunity located in North Haledon, NJ, offering a collaborative small-office environment and overtime eligibility during peak periods.

Responsibilities of the Tax Accountant:

  • Tax Preparation: Prepare and review corporate, partnership, and individual tax returns while ensuring accuracy and compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Corporate Tax Support: Complete corporate tax filings and supporting schedules for business clients across various industries.
  • Bookkeeping Services: Maintain accurate financial records, general ledgers, and account reconciliations for client accounts.
  • Payroll Tax Administration: Prepare and file payroll tax returns while ensuring compliance with reporting requirements.
  • Sales Tax Compliance: Prepare and submit sales and use tax filings for clients as required.
  • Financial Reporting: Assist with the preparation of financial statements and supporting accounting documentation.
  • Client Support: Respond to client inquiries and provide professional assistance regarding tax and accounting matters.
  • Tax Research: Research tax issues and regulations to support accurate filings and client recommendations.
  • Software Utilization: Utilize accounting and tax software to prepare returns, maintain records, and generate reports.
  • Account Reconciliations: Analyze and reconcile financial accounts to ensure data accuracy and completeness.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure adherence to federal, state, and local tax requirements and filing deadlines.
  • Special Projects: Assist with additional accounting, tax, and financial projects as assigned.

Required Experience/Skills for the Tax Accountant:

  • Experience preparing corporate tax returns and related supporting schedules.
  • Strong bookkeeping and general accounting experience.
  • Experience preparing payroll tax returns and sales tax filings.
  • Ability to complete tax returns independently with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local tax regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Experience/Skills for the Tax Accountant:

  • Experience with QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop is preferred.
  • 5+ years of public accounting and tax experience is preferred.
  • Experience with Lacerte tax software is preferred.

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.
  • CPA or progress toward CPA certification is a plus.
