Our client is a mission-driven nonprofit organization seeking a Staff Accountant to support financial operations, grant accounting, and reporting activities. This role plays a key part in maintaining accurate financial records, supporting month-end close activities, and ensuring compliance with grant and funding requirements while contributing to the organization’s overall financial health.
Salary/Hourly Rate:
$60k – $65k Annually
Position Overview:
The Staff Accountant is passionate about accounting and financial stewardship and thrives in a collaborative, service-oriented environment. This role provides support for accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, journal entries, financial reporting, and grant accounting activities. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and eager to grow within a nonprofit organization while supporting critical financial operations. Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills are essential.
Responsibilities of the Staff Accountant:
- Accounts Payable & Receivable Support: Assist with processing and recording accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions while ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Financial Transaction Management: Record daily financial transactions and maintain accurate accounting records.
- Account Reconciliations: Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis.
- Journal Entries: Prepare and post journal entries and assist with month-end close activities.
- Financial Reporting: Support the preparation of monthly financial statements and internal management reports.
- Grant Accounting: Track grant revenues and expenses while ensuring compliance with funding requirements and restrictions.
- Grant Reimbursement Reporting: Prepare grant reimbursement requests and supporting financial reports for funding agencies.
- Program Expense Tracking: Collaborate with program teams to ensure proper coding of grant-related expenses and accurate cost allocations.
- Grant File Maintenance: Maintain organized, audit-ready grant and contract documentation.
- Compliance Support: Assist with maintaining accurate financial records in accordance with organizational policies and accounting standards.
- Process Improvement: Participate in initiatives designed to improve accounting accuracy, efficiency, and internal processes.
- Special Projects: Support the Controller and leadership team with financial analysis and other accounting projects as assigned.
Required Experience/Skills for the Staff Accountant:
- 1 – 3 years of accounting experience, preferably within a nonprofit or grant-funded environment.
- Experience with accounts payable and accounts receivable processes.
- Experience preparing journal entries and supporting month-end close activities.
- Knowledge of general accounting principles and financial reporting practices.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience with accounting software;Â
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
- Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively across departments.
Preferred Experience/Skills for the Staff Accountant:
- Understanding of grant accounting and fund accounting principles is preferred.
- MIP Fund Accounting experience is a plus.
- Nonprofit experience is preferred.
Education Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.
