Salary/Hourly Rate:

$150k – $180k, with flexibility up to $190k for an exceptional candidate, plus potential discretionary bonus.

Position Overview:

Our client is seeking a hands-on Senior Server Administrator to manage, maintain, and enhance the company’s IT infrastructure. This role focuses primarily on server administration and virtualization, with additional responsibilities spanning storage, networking, and occasional end-user support. The ideal candidate has direct experience building and configuring physical and virtual server environments, particularly VMware infrastructure. The Senior Server Administrator must be comfortable independently diagnosing complex technical issues, managing infrastructure projects, and stepping in wherever needed to keep systems reliable and efficient. This is a full-time, permanent opportunity for a resourceful technical professional who enjoys hands-on engineering and takes ownership of infrastructure operations rather than simply overseeing them. The Senior Server Administrator role prioritizes practical technical ability over a specific number of years of experience. Candidates should be prepared to discuss their direct experience building and configuring VMware environments, managing server and storage infrastructure, and independently resolving complex technical issues. This role is onsite 5 days a week for the first 3 months, with the potential to transition to 4 days onsite afterward. There is some flexibility in daily working hours.

Responsibilities of the Senior Server Administrator:

  • Build, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot physical and virtual server environments.
  • Administer VMware infrastructure, including building, configuring, managing, and supporting virtual machines.
  • Monitor server performance, perform routine maintenance, and ensure the stability and availability of critical infrastructure.
  • Manage and support storage systems, addressing capacity, performance, and reliability issues.
  • Troubleshoot complex server, storage, and infrastructure-related problems and implement effective solutions.
  • Support network infrastructure and resolve connectivity issues involving servers and other technology systems.
  • Provide occasional help desk and end-user technical support as business needs require.
  • Identify infrastructure risks, investigate root causes, and resolve technical issues independently.
  • Partner with IT leadership to maintain a secure, reliable, and efficient technology environment.
  • Assist with infrastructure upgrades, migrations, improvements, and ongoing maintenance initiatives.
  • Manage competing technical priorities while maintaining strong service quality and operational standards.

Required Experience/Skills for the Senior Server Administrator:

  • Strong hands-on experience in server administration and enterprise IT infrastructure management.
  • Demonstrated experience building, configuring, and maintaining VMware virtual machines and virtualization environments.
  • Solid understanding of physical servers, virtual infrastructure, and server lifecycle management.
  • Experience managing and troubleshooting storage infrastructure.
  • Working knowledge of networking fundamentals, connectivity troubleshooting, and infrastructure support.
  • Ability to independently diagnose complex technical problems and implement practical solutions.
  • Comfort providing occasional end-user and help desk support when needed.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • A proactive, hands-on approach to infrastructure maintenance, technical projects, and operational improvements.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a primarily on-site environment.

Preferred Experience/Skills for the Senior Server Administrator:

  • Experience working in financial services or another highly demanding enterprise IT environment.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure upgrades, server migrations, virtualization improvements, and capacity planning.
  • Experience supporting interconnected server, storage, and networking environments.
  • Strong initiative, adaptability, and the ability to take ownership of technical challenges with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness and willingness to assist across multiple areas of IT when necessary.

Education Requirements:

  • A degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field is beneficial but not specified as a requirement.
  • Equivalent hands-on experience and demonstrated technical expertise will be considered.

Benefits:

  • Full-time, permanent employment opportunity.
  • Client-provided benefits available, upon eligibility.
  • Competitive base salary.
  • Additional discretionary bonus opportunity.
  • Potential to transition from five onsite days per week to four after the first three months.
  • Some flexibility in daily working hours.
  • Opportunity to take ownership of infrastructure and contribute directly to technical improvements.
  • Hands-on role with exposure to server, virtualization, storage, and networking technologies.
