Our client is a full-service environmental drilling and remediation contractor specializing in subsurface investigations, geotechnical drilling, groundwater monitoring, and environmental site remediation. The company supports Environmental Consultants, Engineers, and Construction teams by providing safe, efficient, and technically advanced drilling solutions for commercial, industrial, and government projects. They are currently looking to add a Cost Controller to their team.
Salary/Hourly Rate:
$50/hr – $60/hr
Position Overview:
The Cost Controller is responsible for overseeing day-to-day accounting operations, maintaining the integrity of the general ledger, leading the month-end close process, and delivering accurate and timely financial reporting. This role supports audit readiness, compliance, and internal controls while partnering cross-functionally to provide financial insights that support organizational decision-making. The position also contributes to process improvement initiatives, accounting systems optimization, and team leadership within the Finance & Accounting department.
Responsibilities of the Cost Controller:
- Manage daily accounting operations and ensure transactions are recorded accurately and in accordance with GAAP and company policies.
- Maintain general ledger integrity through reconciliations, variance analysis, and issue resolution.
- Lead month-end close activities, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and close calendar management.
- Prepare and/or review monthly financial statements and supporting schedules.
- Ensure balance sheet accounts, including cash, receivables, and payables, are reconciled accurately and timely.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis processes.
- Deliver recurring financial reports and ad hoc analyses to leadership and operational teams.
- Coordinate annual audits and serve as a primary liaison with external auditors.
- Prepare compliance-related filings such as 1099s and maintain appropriate financial records retention.
- Maintain and improve accounting policies, procedures, internal controls, SOPs, and checklists.
- Support accounting systems optimization, ERP enhancements, AP automation, and workflow improvements.
- Provide coaching, guidance, and review of accounting staff work product.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with leadership, HR, Operations, Development, and external service providers.
Required Experience/Skills for the Cost Controller:
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience with ownership of month-end close and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and general ledger accounting principles.
- Experience in preparing financial statements and supporting audit activities.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Experience working within ERP/accounting system environments.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy and internal controls.
Preferred Experience/Skills for the Cost Controller:
- CPA designation (active or in progress).
- Public accounting experience.
- Nonprofit accounting experience, including fund accounting and grant reporting.
- Experience strengthening internal controls and documented accounting procedures.
- Experience participating in accounting system implementations or process redesign initiatives.
- Prior leadership or supervisory experience within Accounting teams.
Education Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
