Client Overview:

Our client is a large, established general contracting firm delivering complex construction projects across multiple markets. The organization is recognized for operational excellence, regulatory compliance, and strong financial controls. They are currently looking to add a Sales & Use Tax Accountant to their team. $70k – $85k

Position Overview: 

The Sales & Use Tax Accountant is responsible for managing sales and use tax compliance for a large general contracting operation. This role ensures accurate tax reporting across multiple jurisdictions, supports audits, and partners with internal teams to ensure proper tax treatment of construction projects, materials, and services. The ideal candidate has strong technical tax knowledge and experience within construction or a related industry.

Responsibilities of the Sales & Use Tax Accountant:

  • Prepare, file, and remit sales and use tax returns across multiple states and local jurisdictions.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable sales and use tax regulations for construction projects. 
  • Review contracts, job costs, purchase invoices, and billings for correct tax application. 
  • Manage sales tax exemption certificates and maintain proper documentation. 
  • Reconcile sales and use tax accounts and investigate discrepancies. 
  • Support sales and use tax audits, including data gathering and auditor inquiries. 
  • Monitor changes in tax laws and assess the impact on company operations. 
  • Assist with month-end close activities related to tax accruals and adjustments. 
  • Collaborate with Project Managers, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Finance teams. 
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives related to tax compliance.

Required Experience/Skills for the Sales & Use Tax Accountant:

  • 3 – 5 years of accounting experience with a focus on sales and use tax. 
  • Experience within construction, contracting, or a similar project-based industry. 
  • Strong understanding of multi-state sales and use tax regulations. 
  • Ability to interpret contracts and construction transactions for tax purposes. 
  • Proficiency with accounting systems and Microsoft Excel. 
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills. 
  • Ability to work independently.

Preferred Experience/Skills for the Sales & Use Tax Accountant:

  • Experience supporting sales and use tax audits. 
  • Familiarity with construction accounting and job costing. 
  • Experience working with external tax advisors or consultants. 
  • Knowledge of tax exemptions related to construction materials and services. 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

Education Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.
