Our client, a construction company based out of NYC. They are seeking a highly skilled Controller to join their construction company.

Salary/Hourly Rate:

Up to $185,000

Position Overview:

The Controller will oversee all aspects of financial management, reporting directly to the President and Founder. The ideal Controller candidate will have extensive knowledge of construction accounting principles, strong leadership abilities, and a proven track record of driving financial performance in the construction industry.

Responsibilities of the Controller:

  • Lead the financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting processes for the construction company, ensuring accuracy and alignment with organizational objectives
  • Manage day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger functions
  • Develop and implement internal controls, policies, and procedures to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Oversee project accounting activities, including cost tracking, revenue recognition, and job costing analysis
  • Prepare and analyze financial statements, variance reports, and key performance indicators (KPIs) to monitor project profitability and financial health
  • Coordinate with project managers and executives to review project budgets, assess financial risks, and develop mitigation strategies
  • Manage cash flow, banking relationships, and financing activities to optimize liquidity and minimize borrowing costs
  • Lead the annual audit process, liaising with external auditors and ensuring timely completion of audit deliverables
  • Provide strategic financial guidance to senior management, identifying opportunities for cost savings, revenue growth, and operational efficiency improvements
  • Mentor and develop finance and accounting staff, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning

Qualifications for the Controller:

  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in accounting and financial management, with at least 3 years in a leadership role within the construction industry
  • Thorough understanding of construction accounting principles, including revenue recognition methods, work-in-progress (WIP) accounting, and percentage of completion (POC) accounting
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Sage, Viewpoint, Procore) and Microsoft Office Suite, with advanced Excel skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with the ability to interpret complex financial data and make strategic recommendations
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and communicate financial information to non-financial stakeholders
  • Proven leadership and management capabilities, with a track record of building and developing high-performing teams
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy and integrity in financial reporting and analysis
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and adapt quickly to changing priorities and deadlines
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and compliance standards relevant to the construction industry, including GAAP, IFRS, and industry-specific regulations

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field is required
  • CPA or CMA designation is preferred
