Our client is a leading provider of commercial and industrial HVAC services with more than 85 years of experience delivering maintenance, repairs, and energy-efficient system replacements. With annual sales exceeding $60 million and a long history of family leadership, the company is part of a Fortune 500 organization. Currently, they are looking to add a Controller to their team.

Position Overview:

The Controller will lead the Accounting department, ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining strong internal controls, and supporting executive decision-making. Reporting directly to the CFO, this role requires both strategic and hands-on accounting leadership, with responsibility for managing a team of 3 – 5 professionals.

Responsibilities of the Controller:


  • Oversee month-end close and prepare GAAP-compliant financial statements.

  • Provide strategic financial insights to senior leadership.

  • Lead, mentor, and develop accounting staff.

  • Ensure compliance with internal audit and regulatory standards.

  • Maintain and enhance internal controls and accounting systems.

  • Partner with project managers for accurate revenue recognition and WIP reviews.

  • Support ERP optimization and accounting process improvements.

  • Collaborate with HR, billing, purchasing, warehouse, sales, and customer service.

  • Develop and maintain SOPs for all accounting functions.

  • Support the CFO with corporate reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.

  • Ensure compliance with sales and use tax regulations.

Required Experience/Skills for the Controller:


  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in accounting/finance leadership (10+ preferred).

  • Strong GAAP knowledge and experience in preparing financial statements.

  • Proven experience managing AP/AR functions and working with external auditors.

  • Advanced ERP system knowledge and Microsoft Excel skills.

  • Ability to work independently with strong organizational and time-management skills.

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and team management skills.

Preferred Experience/Skills for the Controller:


  • Prior industry experience in service, construction, or related fields.

  • Experience with job costing and COINS ERP+.

  • Strong project management and process improvement skills.

Education Requirements:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.

  • A CPA certification is preferred.

  • Master’s degree (MSA, MPA, MBA) in Accounting or Business Administration is a plus.
