Client Overview:
Our client, a well-established New York City–based nonprofit organization, is committed to making a lasting impact through community engagement, advocacy, and programmatic services. With a strong presence in the sector, the organization partners with local and national funders to advance its mission and support underserved populations. Currently, they are looking to add a Senior Accountant to their team.
Salary/Hourly Rate:
$35/hr – $45/hr (Depending on experience)
Position Overview:
The Senior Accountant will support the financial health and operational effectiveness of the organization with a primary focus on nonprofit and grant accounting. This is a newly created role due to organizational growth and will report directly to senior leadership within the finance department. The ideal candidate will bring deep nonprofit accounting expertise, particularly in managing city and foundation grants, and a proactive approach to process improvement and cross-departmental collaboration.
Responsibilities of the Senior Accountant:
- Manage and maintain the general ledger, ensuring accuracy and compliance with GAAP and organizational policies.
- Lead the full lifecycle of grant accounting: budgeting, tracking, reporting, and closeout of city, state, and private foundation grants.
- Ensure compliance with grantor requirements, preparing timely and accurate financial reports and supporting documentation.
- Review and analyze contracts and grant agreements for appropriate revenue recognition and compliance implications.
- Coordinate with the Development, Programs, and Operations teams to align financial data and resolve discrepancies.
- Oversee the reconciliation of all banking, credit card, and third-party payment platforms.
- Monitor accounts payable and receivable, investigate aging balances, and resolve delinquencies.
- Prepare monthly cash flow reports and bank reconciliations; maintain robust cash handling procedures.
- Assist in audit preparation, including year-end schedules, reconciliations, and responses to external auditor inquiries.
- Identify and recommend enhancements to internal controls, financial workflows, and reporting systems.
- Participate in new system implementations and other finance-related special projects as needed.
Required Experience/Skills for the Senior Accountant:
- 16+ years of progressive accounting experience, including substantial nonprofit accounting work
- Extensive knowledge of city and foundation grant accounting (federal grant knowledge a plus).
- Must have recent experience working within a nonprofit organization.
- Strong understanding of GAAP, fund accounting, and grant compliance standards.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, data analysis).
- Experience working with accounting systems and financial databases (Intacct preferred).
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage competing deadlines and work both independently and collaboratively.
- High level of integrity and discretion when working with sensitive financial information.
Preferred Experience/Skills for the Senior Accountant:
- Federal grant knowledge is a plus.
- Intacct experience is preferred.
Education Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.
- CPA or equivalent nonprofit accounting certification is a plus, but not required.
