Our client is an engineering firm servicing Pharma/Life Sciences clients. They are looking to add a Senior Controls Engineer to their team.

Position Overview:

The Senior Controls Engineer role necessitates proven technology expertise for the development of automation solutions with PLC, DCS, HMI, and SCADA platforms. This role entails direct client interaction and the coordination of the engineers’ team to identify needs, devise specifications, and see through the implementation, testing, commissioning, and qualification of automation solutions. This leadership role within the business unit demands robust problem-solving capabilities, systematic project management skills, proficient interpersonal skills, a knack for business efficiency, and a willingness to foster partnerships. Success in this position is reflected by securing repeated business from both new and existing clients.

Responsibilities of the Senior Controls Engineer:

  • The Senior Controls Engineer will deliver cutting-edge automation solutions and designing benchmarks, either autonomously or as a team leader. The applicant must be adept at conceptualizing, articulating, and executing control systems for industrial operations and machinery as per customer specifications. This encompasses designing a control system framework, determining the components, designing schematic diagrams, and developing system documentation.
  • The Senior Controls Engineer would design and execute various fiber, wired, and wireless systems using industrial protocols like Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Modbus, etc.
  • Take charge of programming controllers such as PLC, DCS, and RTU as well as in processing visualization (HMI/SCADA), building databases for storing/displaying historical system data, and commissioning the control system at the client’s site is critical. Familiarity with controller programming languages including Ladder, Sequential Function Chart, and Structured Text, among others, is essential to achieve desired outcomes. Knowledge of standard programming languages including VBA, .NET, and SQL for HMI/SCADA systems development is preferable.
  • The Senior Controls Engineer is responsible for project management tasks such as creating project execution plans, developing work breakdown structures, allocating budgets, setting task priorities and schedules, tracking time & finances, identifying & resolving problems early, leading and supporting the team, and attending project status meetings.
  • Oversee the operations and activities of projects up to $1M and be responsible for the project’s overall profitability.
  • Serve as the technical lead on projects and provide guidance to junior engineers and technicians. They may also act as a Project Manager on smaller-scale projects.

Qualifications for the Senior Controls Engineer:

  • The ideal applicant should possess a wide range of engineering skills and be able to work independently
  • For larger systems, experience with industrial networking to connect control system components and instruments is desirable.
  • In-depth understanding of PLC hardware/software platforms such as Rockwell Automation, Siemens, and Modicon.
  • In-depth understanding of HMI/SCADA hardware/software platforms such as GE iFIX, Rockwell Automation FactoryTalk View, Inductive Automation’s Ignition, and Siemens.
  • In-depth understanding of DCS hardware/software platforms such as Emerson DeltaV, Rockwell PlantPAx, or similar.
  • Familiarity with electrical schematics, including power distribution under 480VAC, control panels, and associated NEC references is desired.
  • Experience with AutoCAD is a plus.
  • Experience leading a team of engineers/technicians to provide control system solutions.
  • Experience mentoring less experienced engineers.
  • Proven experience in managing, leading, and guiding automation design and implementation projects in the Life Science industry.
  • Proven experience with all phases of automation projects including conceptual, basis of design, implementation, testing, start-up, and commissioning of Process Control Systems (PCS), SCADA, and DCS in the Life Science industry.
  • Strong knowledge of S88 Batch.
  • Familiarity with relevant regulatory requirements of the life science industry such as cGMP, 21 CFR Part 11, etc.
  • Familiarity with GAMP5, System and Software Development Life Cycles methodologies, validation.
  • Strong knowledge of IT/OT networking.
  • Extensive knowledge of automation protocols such as HART, Foundation Fieldbus, Traditional I/O, Profibus, Ethernet I/P, OPC, Modbus TCP/IP, etc.
  • Experience with relational databases such as SQL, Oracle, etc.
  • Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills.

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical/Control Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Computer Science is required.
